Knee Joint Replacement

Robotic assisted knee replacement using the MAKO robotic arm is a relatively new technology in Austin and Dr. Burris is trained in this technology. The technology allows for more precise machining of the joint surfaces and allows for a more customized knee replacement that is specifically fit or balanced for your knee. In theory, this can allow for a longer lasting and better feeling knee replacement.

The decision to proceed with a knee replacement is not an easy one. It is a significant operation and the experience can be frightening and can create anxiety. However, for those with painful arthritis, a knee replacement can mean the difference between immobility and the return to an independent life.

Total knee replacements last for many years: about 90-95% of total knee replacements are still functioning at 15 years. Some people will later require a revision or redo knee replacement. The operation takes about 2 hours to complete and typically involves a 1 day stay in the hospital. Walking begins the day of surgery with a walker. Progression to a cane takes about 2 to 3 weeks and then the need for a cane dissipates after about 6 weeks. Rehabilitation starts immediately after the operation and continues after you leave the hospital. Full recovery varies from person to person, but can take up to 6 months overall. For those who are working, return to work occurs as soon as pain and mobility allow and this can happen as soon as 4 weeks after the operation.

There are risks involved with the operation and this is something you should discuss in detail with Dr. Burris so you can make an informed decision.

It is important to select an experienced surgeon that you are comfortable with when you decide to have this operation. Dr. Burris has been performing knee surgery for over 15 years including:
